You're an otaku when you're already doing what hassun and animemeg said. Plus, you stay inside your room all the time and forget the outside world because you're too busy watching anime, reading manga, playing eroge and fapping to hentai.
You start losing real friends and your new best friends are either otaku like you, otaku from "elite" discussion groups, or that new female/male lead in your new visual novel.

I have a good day, then I'll listen to some J-pop until I go deaf. I find it to be quite calming. But that's just me.
