Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

I haven't seen any threads about Studio Ghibli's recent project around here so I guess I'll just make one myself.

It's about a small fish girl being found by a boy after having a close encounter with a trawler. They fall in love and the fish girl decides she wants to become human.
(Yes it sounds like the little mermaid but rest assured, it has plenty of originality going for it.)

Personally, I rate Ghibli films on a depression scale. The better it is, the more depressed I am leaving the theatre.
... And yes, I was pretty much a suicidal wreck by the end of it so that rates it pretty damn high.
While I did realise this film is aimed more squarely at kids (and people who like to "D'AWWWWWWWWW so cuuuuuute") than some Studio Ghibli classics it's still enjoyable for people of all ages and more than confirms that Hayao Miyazaki and his team stand on the very pinnacle of animated film. Pixar can only hope to dream about ever reaching this level of expertise.

I watched the film subtitled but the dub might not be that bad either for people who prefer that. Names like Liam Neeson, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett don't sound too bad.

I would say it's typical Hayao Miyazaki brilliance, not the best he's ever done but still head and shoulders above the competition.

I had only recently heard of this movie.
I would say my favorite of his movies was Howl's Moving Castle, but, like Hassun so aptly put it, the other movies are still well above the rest of the competition. besides, there's a certain charp to an animated film. Our silly American companies think the only movies people want to watch are CGI.....
I'll definitly go give this a watch.

If it's Studio Ghibli, there's a good chance it comes to the US.
i can't wait till it does. I don't care if it is geared more for children, i will still watch it.

I still need to watch Nausicca of the Valley of Wind
