Thread: what's with sword or battle oriented anime and sword licking?

Licking the blood off a sword or just the sword basically shows the fighter's own ferocity as well as his or her lust for blood. It is simply for the sake of show and is used as a way to provoke and intimidate the opponent.

Well said. I couldn't have said it better myself. It's all just to show how intimidating an opponent is.

funny yet in almost all the anime i read the person who does that is the main characters' enemy and loses. still the other person doesn't look very intimidated. well idk maybe i'm just interpreting the emotions wrong.

The idea is also to show that here is a certain level of mental imbalance. Someone who's evil is more likely to be crazy-in-the-brain and therefore enjoy licking their blade in anticipation of slaughter. It's a stereotypical "Oh hay lookit me I'm crazy" indicator.

i alway thought it was like a sexual thing, like, 'im hot and about to whup your ass'..thing..
is that just my me.....?

I don't know if this is an odd trait, but its kinda annoying. Alot of times animators still draw the character's eyes, even when it should be covered by their hair.

It happens because most animators start with the eyes first. It's easier to not erase the eyes if what your drawing overlaps with it. I guess anything they can do to have the episode out in time. However, that normally doesn't happen in any good quality shows, so it just depends on what you watch.
