    Unfortunately, being made in Japan is not by itself, an indication if a series is Anime... the cartoon series 'Batman Beyond', 'X-Men Evolution' and 'GI Joe Sigma 6' were all animated by Japanese studios, but clearly are not Anime, as they were not written and targeted for a Japanese audience. On the other hand, the upcoming 'Space Battleship Yamato' sequel (which is definitely a Japanese Anime iconic series) is being produced by a Korean animation studio... And then you have these hybrids that are difficult to classify, such as the 'Witchblade' series, which is based on an American comic book franchise, but is clearly targeted for a Japanese audience. And the 'Highlander: The Search for Vengeance' movie that is based on a Hollywood TV series...

    Ultimately, the answer is $$$ In addition to the actual costs of licensing a series made in another country, there is also the sticky issue of merchandising rights. Before the licensing of the series 'Naruto', (which was rumored to be a very expensive license) US networks would insist on having the US merchandising rights. (And also as a result of this, the top rated Anime series never saw a US distribution...) With 'Naruto' VIZ/Shoupro was able to set the precedent of limiting duration of the TV broadcasting license, as well as keeping the merchandising rights. In addition, they already controlled the manga franchise.

    The Anime 'Bubble' that started back in 2002, the asking price for Anime licenses started going through the roof. This in turn cased the US media companies to turn to their own resources (D.C. Comics is owned by Time/Warner...) as a replacement, where they had better control of the property rights. Now that the Anime 'Bubble' has burst, and license fees have become more reasonable, US media companies are reluctant to go back to Japanese Anime because of the problems they encountered in the past...

    wait let me if i got this:

    Your saying that is cost to high to Put anime on air, Because of Cheap TWC =time wanner cable, but American shows like x men are going back to Japan for help with their on shows and still not putting anime on there.. It makes no since thjat america and japan can't come to some kind of parntership

    I mean The USA want Japan's help in or for the art work for shows like Batman beyond and still refuse to let anime in to the states because america's is still too cheap to pay for shows that the anime fans want..

    So does this mean that anime shows will be only avaible at place like FYE or best buy or has american tv cut off the DVD shippments as well?

    It's hard to say which direction the industry is going. The Anime Bubble started because of the growing popularity of Anime, and made expansions plans based on the assumption of a growing US market. But as it turned out, only a small fraction of 'Anime Fans' were willing to put money down to purchase the Anime they were watching... Direct distribution of Anime DVD became nothing more then a niche market, with a release considered successful if it sells over a thousand units. (Compared to Hollywood productions that sell DVDs in the 100,000 range) This has led to the current trend of eliminating the English Dub (who's cost can run in the mid to high 10s of thousands of dollars). And with the cost of English Dubs, and lack of merchandising revenue, US networks are reluctant to take on a untried and unknown new anime series unless they can find a advertising sponsor that can share in the risks...

    What we are starting to see is US partnerships directly with the Anime networks and studios in Japan. Disney is currently showing a Japan localized 'Lilo & Stich' anime TV series. And MARVEL had announced an agreement with Studio MADHOUSE for several series based on it's comic book super heroes, with test footage of 'Ironman' and 'Wolverine' animation shown at this years Comic-Con back in August...

    I just wish more networks would jump on board and show more Anime & action cartoon like The late and great toonami did, but every network have to Show their own shows like Disney XD Because Zack and lurther, or arron stone have the red carpent.

    while Nartro and all the marvel cartoons get the treated like second classes people, the same with kids cw Sonic X and other shows get booted up or get to name there on time slots while Yu-giho and the ninja turtles are almost in the dead time slots..

    And don't get me started on Cartoon network and what is wrong with their anime line up and {adult swim}

    Im sorry but if someone declared spongebob an anime, tha twould be a huge insult to all the hard working people who take time to make anime shows. (well the really good ones). it is an animation, or cartoon. dont be confused.
