It's a bit of both...in the beginning, they just try to bring their mother back. Doesn't work, Ed loses his arm and leg, Al his body....

So, in order to get their bodies back they're going to use the philosophers stone if they can find it, but at the same time use it to bring back their mother (because the stone gives extreme power, which they didn't have in the first attempt).

As the storyline progresses, they find out what the philosopher stone is actually made of, which causes conflict with them, and are about to give up on both ideas.....but then they get talked back in to finishing what they started, except Ed and Al determine that they're just going to get their appendages and body back, and don't focus on bringing back their mom.


I'd highly recommend reading the manga before watching the anime (if you're going to do both). The storyline while good in the anime, is even better in the manga, and I think more hard-hitting, especially when it comes to human transmutation. The anime and the manga take two different directions with human transmutation, and I think the manga one is far better.

i am a fma freak i know about alot of them

ed:is a brother of al and he has 1leg and arm missing lol we all know that he promissed to get al body back, and he has a crush on rose and winery i think lol he can teansmute without a circle

al:brother of ed he is in a suit of armor helps his brother along to get his body back and his arm and leg lol he never gets his arm and leg back al promesed to get eds arm and leg back lol

wineary:she is one who takes care of eds arm and leg because ther auto mail she fixes them

just scan though the FMA forum there's plenty of fans here. rent the movie, buy the anime series, but i do advise checking out the forum if your interrested in buying the anime. Reading the facts + opinions might help.

Ed only wanted the philosopher stone to restore the body of Al and his lost leg and arm ,at the first time they wanted their mother back but after their attempt of human transformation Ed and Al realized the mistake they had done and started their journey searching for the power that can return everything back before the attempt and that was the philosopher stone
