In their intention to create a 'human transmutation circle' Edward loses his left leg, while Alphonse, his entire body. While desperately trying to save his brother’s life, Edward gives up his right arm, and affixes Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor.

Roy Armor, the 'State Alchemist' arrives on the scene to help the two boys, and he advises them to become a State Alchemist himself, so that he could work with Roy. Edward and Alphonse hear about the Philosopher’s Stone, and set out to search for it, so that they could use it to restore their bodies. The adventures on the way, and the discovery of the many secrets behind the Philosopher’s Stone make up the rest of the series, and this in sum is the story of the Fullmetal Alchemist.
