Cool Manga You Didn't Expect to like, but actually wound up liking

Okay, let's not deny it. Some manga sound so stupid/strange/silly enough to repel us. And, more often than not, we are kind of chased away from them.

But then there are those titles that you think you'll hate, but after you read a good portion of it, you actually realize it's not half-bad.

For me, anyway, I have four in particular.

Mysterious Girlfriend X (Okay, I read the premise out loud and it sounded extremely stupid. I said to myself, "This may end up killing me, but I just gotta know". But as I continued reading it, I agree that it's pretty brow-raising at times, but it can come off as pretty emotional, sweet, and kind of funny now and then.)

Love Hina (This manga is my ultimate guilty pleasure. Looking at it, I realize that it's one of the dumbest ideas in the world, but for one reason or another, I wound up liking it. Okay, the humor ranges from enjoyable to silly to downright-dumb, but it at least makes up for it with a decent story, likeable characters, and well-balanced romance.)

Franken Fran (Normally, I'm not one for mature series. Wanting to see what this was all about, I had to check this out. The summary was right on the fact that this series is pretty dang disturbing at times, but I found myself chuckling at some of the dark humor and showing fascination with the life science. Yes, I know it's impossible, but Franken Fran actually makes it seem like it could happen.)

Elfen Lied (I, at first, had to shake my head at it. But some part of it kept gnawing at my brain until I just went over to the site and checked it out. On the outside, it looks like a harmless, cute girl story, but on the inside, it's just UNBELIEVABLY dark and violent. It deals in deep, psychological issues, a threat-to-mankind storyline, and actually ends in tragedy. Dang...just DANG.)
