Many famous artists/manga-ka have started out doing these before moving onto Rensai (serial comic) and ultimately a full blown series. Notably, Berserk started out as a one-shot…

So, at risk of this thread being buried alive without a post… Let me know of your experience with one-shots.

Artist: Obata Takeshi (Hikaru no Go, Deathnote)

an assassin, his friend and his girlfriend…starts out with the main character doing some recon on a kill all set to make the big time but then finds that his girlfriend is pregnant therefore turning his world on end, needless to say with this set up tragedy ensues. Obata’s artwork is godly to me sometimes and this is one of those cases. It also amazes me how Morita and Obata can cram all this drama into one little short. It makes me feel that sometimes you might find more charm in something short and sweet rather than a full length series.

I don't have a lot of experiences with one shots but I have read a few. One that comes to mind is "Emerald" by Hiroaki Samura. Known for his pornographic art and Blade of the Immortal.

As you can see below it's actually a story situated in America's Old West. Mainly about greed, land ownership, etc. The typical stuff really.

me too, I've read a few one-shots
I remember one called Noiz of higuchi daisuke (don't know other work of him though u.u). is from a boy who can see the future of the people by touching them and predicts the death of many of them

I'm not sure if these count as "one-shots" but Rumiko Takahashi used to do graphic novels like Rumic Theatre and others that were short stories that is usually one chapter. There's no similarities between the stories really, it was as if she just drew and wrote about whatever she wanted.

A teenage outcast finds a kindred spirit in a visual kei fangirl who is teased by the other members of the fandom for her less-than-stellar clothes and appearance. When the lead singer of her favorite band commits suicide, she convinces the boy that there are coded messages in his songs calling them to a world where "people like them" can belong. They share a brief romantic interlude before parting with a vague, delirious promise that they'll kill their respective bullies and return to the same spot... Oh wow I've wanted to read that but I dunno if it's out here in the U.S or not cause it looks really interesting and now that I see your synopsis of it I'd like to read it.-^__^-
But yeah I have read a one shot surprised no one has mentioned it,it's a manga one-shot by Yukiru Sugisaki(Note.N.Angel creater)called Lagoon Engine Einsatz and I really liked it,here's a synopsis from animenewsnetwork.

"Lagoon Engine Einsatz is the story of Sakis, a girl who will become a man, and King of Lagoonaria and wield the Godsword, Lagoonverse. Sakis is one who can use the powers of the Gods, and so she protects the kingdom with them. Her enemy is the intriguing Arcrave Gutlerfurwan, who commands the fabled Black Ship. On top of this person's arrival, Sakis must deal with the awakening of old and new gods and the protective barriers of Laggonaria collapsing. Sakis deals with the changes occurring in her world and her own personal change from a young girl to a man."

Oh and,by the way,what it means by sakis becoming a man is that in the lagoon engine einsatz revealed thingy that tells about terms and key phrases that are in the manga says "While all lagoonarians are born female, some later choose to become male, thus binding themselves to lifelong duty.The duties vary depending on the man, and they may include protecting others or defeating an enemy" but dunno how exactly that is but it's a part of the manga plot eheh.-^u^-;
