I've only seen the first few episodes, but I'm curious, how many, in all, episodes are there and why aren't they allowed over the wall?

Thanks lol, I probly would have found that if I googled it:P but they never showed what's behind that wall? That's mean making a big deal out of not going over the wall and then not explaining why.

They do show what's behind the wall, (it's nothing but countryside) and they do show that 'some' outsiders from outside the wall are allowed in...

I just barely finished the series last night. Boy, was it a good ending.

I was actually dissappointed with the ending, left me wanting more, but then again, thats just good writing, always leave the audience wanting more.

There's a theory that the city is a sort of purgatory. Everyone are actually just souls and some of the Haibane are just people that commited suicide or died in strange ways. Their dreams representing their deaths. This form of purgatory is a sort of paradise and nobody can really get out because why leave a paradise? Behind the city walls might be a sort of hell and people that are cast out are ostracized and are looked down upon.

Of course, Yoshitoshi ABe doesn't agree with this theory so it's nothing more than speculation. ABe wanted the viewer to figure out his or her own interpretation. Purgatory or not, dead or alive, it's all up to the viewer's own personal opinion of what it all really means.

It's reopened then.
I recently got the first DVD of Haibane Renmei for free.
I watched the first few episodes and I don't really know what to think, it's not really my kind of anime but I am curious...
