In some anime and manga series you have characters who adds nothing special or particular to the plot of the story line. But to die (mostly in a horrid way) to give the main character something to cry about, sometimes multiple episodes long. Most of the time they are the best friend of the main character, and the only thing you know about them are some funny moments, or little conversations
For instance, Gundam:Seed, Nicol Amarfi and Tolle Koenig get's killed by Athrun and Kira ( don't know i've i'm spoiling something,. sorry ) or
Full Metal Alchemist had an example with Nina being destroyed by Scar
The only reason why they were in the series was to add this emotional effect to the story and another trauma for some characters

Who knows a few other anime's or manga's where this kind of thing happends?
Who's the lamb and what happends to him/her ?
How did you feel about that ?
(sometimes sad ofcourse, but sometimes an extremly annoying person dies, =)
that's a plus right? )

another one from full metal alchemist would be when that one general got killed!!!! (the one who used to always talk about his little daughter) i swear he was annoying as hell!!
