Hmmm....Code Geass ranks up there pretty high (i dont care what the fangirls say...hes dead...get over it).

The TV version of Air isn't very happy either.

Another kind of bittersweet one is Kikoushi Enma.

I can keep the list going all night...but I'd have to say those are my top 3. (Code Geass was a tad cliche)

And yes...im such a tragedy fan this is my first post in over 3 years...

Fufufufufu.... Wolf's Rain was very sad. They all died trying to find Paradise. But only to find out it was a lie, like cake. As well as Trigun. I wasn't pleased when Legato died. Or when Wolfwood died. Those manga-ka seem to love messing with their fans. Fufufufufufu.....

I thought the same thing about Ligato ,i mean why would he kill himself with Vash's hands just to give him a mental shock that's probable to be overcame in the future? while he can manipulate Vash with other million ways giving him maybe even stronger mental shocks ,if not physical!

I was rather sad when he died too. Fufufufufufufu.... I loved Legato. He was my favorite.

Besides Code Geass I'm having trouble thinking of an anime that ended really sadly. When I started thinking about manga I have read, I remember Video Girl AI hit me pretty hard. Granted that's not exactly a sad ending, but its the most emotional thing I could think of at the moment.

I have to say the ending to Gundam 00 season 1. Although it's not the end of the series, It still was really sad, especially the death of Lockon. I was actually crying.

Code geass is a close second, Lelouch is one of my more favorite characters in anime. He died because he wanted to change the world. So he did, and he let Suzaku and his sister live on. But right after his death where I almost cried. . . I laughed my butt off because of how loud Nunnaly must have been to be heard over ALL of those people chanting "Zero".

i gess the gundam00 s1 was sad with lokon and the other 2 (can't rememb his and her name) well atleast those two died in eachothers arms (or 1 and a half)
