When looking for a new anime series to watch, one thing you might want to try is to watch something that is completly different then what you've seen in the past... (who knows, you may discover that you like something that's different...)

One of the biggest sleeper series that has a honored spot on my DVD collection shelf is a Baseball Anime series put out by NHK (Japanese Public Broadcasting) that's called 'Princess Nine'...

The hallowed stadiums of Japanese baseball become a battlefield as the bats crack, the sweat flies and every hard-earned run becomes another step in the long road-trip to victory! Sizzling sports action and gripping drama intertwine as nine young women come together in the acclaimed series that has fans cheering around the world!
If you want drama, this series has more of it then a dozen typical action anime series. This mid-90s anime series is about average in animation quality (and has the typical low frame-rate count of that period), and the story is full of plot cliches, (but not the ones you expect to see in a sports anime series...) and suffers from the typical sports anime ending... But this series is simply the best written drama story of any anime series I've ever seen. Everyone I've loaned this series to has lost many hours of sleep, in an attempt to find out what happens next, as by the second DVD of the series, nearly every episode ends on a dramatic cliff hanger... ADV Films distributes this series and has an affordable collection brick, but forget about the cheesy english dub... Straight Japanese with subtitles is the only way to watch this series...

I have seen the box set for this series that is suppose to be from the creator (Yoshitoshi Abe) of SE: Lain called Texhnolyze. I rather enjoy deeper series like Lain so that won't deter me if this series is deep as well I do prefer to talk to someone that has seen it before shelling out $150 on it.

Also Yoshitoshi Abe has a series out called Haibane Renmei which is suppose to be excellent so I would like opinions on it as well!

I'm in the process of working through the collection set right now... And talk about a series with Atmosphere, 'Texhnolyze' is almost nothing but atmosphere... In the opening episode, the number of complete sentences of spoken dialog you can count on one hand... I'm half way through the fourth DVD, and the series is still nothing but hints about what is actually happening.... It definatly ranks as one of the 'deeper' series around... but it's much much darker then Haibane Renmei, without a likeable character to the series...

One warning about this series is that it is not intended to be watched, it has to be experienced. Because of this, any verbal description of this series will not do it justice... And because of this, a degree of both maturity and patience is required to fully enjoy this series...

I've also seen Haibane Renmei, while still deep, is a thoughly enjoyable series about a group of people who aren't quite angels, or humans, but are in a somewhat 'inbetween' state. The series is a slice of life story on how the characters deal with their situation as they grow and evolve... This is a excellent series that is highly recommended...

    Re: Anime Recommendations

I would like to suggest Bleach! I have watched all of the episodes up to the newest ones (They had subs, they were japanese!)

Bleach is all about Ichigo Kurosaki(15) who lives a normal life, except for the fact that he can see ghosts!!! Anyway, one day, Ichigo meets a girl called Kuchuki Rukia, who is a DEATH GOD. Ichigo gains Rukias powers and fights hollows(bad spirits) and sends good spirits to Heaven in her place!

    SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit by Hammer....spolier tags apparently don't work on this forum...

It is much better than my explanation, it contains action, comedy and a cool mascot!!!

    <licensed anime pirate> has episodes!

It's a good suggestion, but I've already mentioned this anime earlier on lol. I'll have to agree with you though - Bleach really is an awesome anime. One of my all time favourites actually. You'd better get rid of that link in your post before a mod comes across it lol.

One series that I just finished viewing (with this weeks release of DVD #6) is 'Gankutsuou', the Sci-Fi remake of 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. This series was awarded a 'Best Anime TV series) for the year 2004 at the Tokyo Anime Festival, and after finishing this series, I can say that it is fully worthy of this Award... 'Gankutsuou' is one of the more adult themed series, with the story (based on classic, The Count of Monte Cristo) about one man's quest for revenge, and how he goes about obtaining it, and it's after effects on everyone around him... With most of the episodes occuring in a Sci-Fi Paris of the future, everything about this series makes it easily one of the most stylistic since 'Serial Experiment Lain'

It's a little early to start talking about best Anime releases for this year, but the way it looks right now, of the series that will complete their Region 1 release for this year, the two most outstanding releases are 'Full Metal Alchemist' (who's movie took this year's grand prize at the Tokyo Anime Fair) and the GONZO Studio series 'Gankutsuou'... For those looking for a more serious adult themed series, 'Gankutsuou' has my highest recommendation...
