No bonus points on the historical significance, but the anime sounds a lot like Tenchi Muyo. I do know that this is one of the few anime that was not based on an existing manga; the manga was created after the first OVA was released in Japan.

Back in the early 1990s, Pioneer of Japan came out with the first consumer digital media format, (known as the 'Laser Disk'), and to promote sales of the media player, Pioneer created a new division (Pioneer Laser Disc Corporation) to produce 'media' for it's players. The premier anime series funded by Pioneer LDC was the OVA series 'Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Oki'...

In addition to being the first anime series produced for digital media, 'Tenchi Muyo' greater claim to fame is that it is the ORIGINAL HAREM SERIES, a popular anime genre who's use production continues to this day...

Tenchi Muyo also has a large number of sequel and spinoff series, both in the same original OVA storyline, alternate retellings, and totally different and unrelated universes with the same characters

Um, Let me think. Is it Blue Seed? That is the only anime I can think of that fits the clues.

Blue Seed is almost like a precursor to Inuyasha; A girl finds out she isn't who she thinks she is, she falls for a guy who was in love with someone like her, he vows to protect her, they fight strange monsters with the help of their newfound friends.

The main characters are boys. One of the main boys is the lead singer in a band. The other male is a writer; he also had something bad happen to him when he was younger.

The anime I've got in mind - One of the main characters is indeed the lead singer of a band, and the other main character is indeed a writer with a rash past. It's Gravitation! ^_^

- main character finds herself victim to the four most notorious, richest guys of her school.
- has been turned into a Japanese tv drama series spanning over 9 episodes in total.
- has also served as a basis for a live action tv series from taiwan.
- manga comprises of 36 volumes, anime consists of 51 episodes.
