Scene from the Shimabara Rebellion (left)
      by Yamato Takato
from the prohibitively expensive artbook "Divertimento for a Martyr"

(apologies for the inconsistant blacks on these... this artbook cost a small fortune and I'm a bit hesistant to destroy it in scanning ^^; )

My favorite piece. The Shimabara Rebellion (1637) was a battle between the Tokugawa sanctioned daimyou of the region and a group of as many as 30,000 ronin samurai and peasants (including women) over rising taxes and religious persecution. The rebels had, for the most part, converted to Christianity making the battle a clash of class, faith and the Japanese status quo.

After a string of major rebel successes, the Shogunate sent a 200,000 strong force to defeat them. In the end 37,000 people were beheaded by the Shogunate for joining or supporting the rebels.

As a direct result of the rebellion the Tokugawa Shogunate systematically exiled Portuguese missionaries from the country and began to round up and execute any Christians who would not publically renounce their faith (the Christian faith had already been outlawed at the time of the rebellion).
