The song lyrics and title are from an old Japanese song that's a standard in junior high choral competitions...

The exact line in Japanese translates to: "I want to spread my wings in the open sky; I want to flap my wings and go where there's no sadness, only freedom..."

Kaworu's a junior high student, we know he likes to sing... it seemed like this is a song he might actually sing alone on a rooftop...
