Let me start off saying this is one of my favorite series, but I will try and keep it unbiased when it comes to the review.
Plot The story takes place around 1928 in New York. The new era brought the so called sinners out, or devils as they are referred. The story revolves around Rosette Christopher and her assistant, Chrono. They are both exorcists of the Magdalene Order, whose sole purpose is to counter the devils. A twist to the story is that Chrono himself is a devil who lost his horns and made a pact with Rosette. This pact shortens her life, but allows Chrono to tap into his powers to fight off the devils. At the same time as fighting the devils, Rosette and Chrono are also looking for Rosette's brother, Joshua. Sound and Visuals The visuals in this anime are just beautiful. The character designs are flawless and I can't really think of any moment in the entire show that I was a let down from them. I was impressed by the soundtrack as well in the series. The opening is one of my favorites in all of the anime I have watched, and I've watched a lot of anime. There were plenty of good audio backgrounds for the various fight scenes that I feel helped make the scenes more exciting. Story / Mood This show has a rare topic brought into the anime - religion. It incorporates religion really well and it makes a great story. The show is also heavily packed with good fight scenes with the devils. There was a great deal of comedy put in between the fights, which helped make the show more enjoyable and easygoing. I don't personally agree with the romance aspect of the show. It just seemed rushed and made no sense as to where it was coming from. It didn't bother me though, and it also helped create one of the saddest moments in the whole series, but I won't spoil it. The characters were well developed throughout the series, and you'll become easily attached to some of them. Final Thoughts / DVD & Specials Well, as I said before, this is one of my favorites. The story was well done, the characters were beautiful, and the audio was good too. The ending is also rememberable and quite good. I bought the complete collection pack with 5 disks in all. There were also two soundtracks titled Gospel I and Gospel II. I believe I bought it for around $80, so it is really affordable for a great series. There weren't any extras though seeing as how it was a thinpack. If you like religion in anime, like some good action, and like a little bit of comedy / romance, then I definitely recommend this series. Officilal website at http://www.madman.com.au/chronocrusade/.

The character design also seems flawless and draws you into the story. Each one has a strong 'Backstory' that draws you into the story itself and your able to see each angle of the plot from their own point of view. As for the fight scenes, huge appocoliptic duals between Daemons in the skies and theres isn't really much of the 'Macho kick-your-ass' boasting that gets boring. The weapon design is also very original with the 'Holy' bullets, but Remington's sword is just bitching. Think of Cloud's (FFVII) Buster Sword with a Light Saber styled blade. The guns are also very acurate to that era and the technology dosen't seem unbelievable! The romance parts do seem a bit rushed, but something has to break up the fighting and show that the characters are still human. Of sorts. All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone. It has a great mix of action and comedy, but also touches on the serious side of life and has a great 'un-corny' ending! ------------------------------ A man may fight for many things: his country, his priciples, his freinds. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a Ton of cash, an amusing clock and a stack of french porn! |
