Based on a book of the same name by J.R.R Tolkien.

Summary

The story about Frodo (in the mythical world of Middle-earth) as he comes into possession of a powerful ring and deadly ring that can only be destroyed by casting it into the volcano of Mount Doom. This first movie tells the story of the discovery of the ring, the forming of the fellowship and it's separation.

Sounds and Visuals

Definitely best watched in the Cinema's or only if you have a good sound system. The thumping of feet, the clashing of swords and the deadly silence at times, makes you feel like your right there with them. Besides the fact that some of the settings don't exist on Earth (eg. Moria) and that you've never seen rivers do that before, you would swear that it was all real. Massive CGI armies and mythical creatures are all done well.

Casting

For once, a book to movie adaptation, that pick the right actors to portray the characters. Every single one of them brings the character from the book onto our screens. Even Andy Serkis who plays the role of Gollum, did a brilliant job, keeping in mind that Gollum is predominantly a CGI character.

What? A good book to movie?

Yes! About time too! Peter Jackson has provided us with a good formula for making adaptations from books to movies. Give someone a high budget, a bunch of fabulous actors and brilliant settings, and of course the ability to keep to the story but at the same time not make a 4 hour movie (which sitting through it for the first time, I thought it might be!).

Final Thoughts

This is probably the best (and only?) good book to movie adaptation. Peter Jackson chooses what needed to be kept in and keep out with out destroying the story and the characters. I always thought that no-one would ever be able to put real-life people into book characters. Jackson proved me wrong (gladly!).

I don’t think this is the one to watch over and over again though, due to it's length of 2 hours plus.

Pros: amazing sound affects and graphics
      Cons: plot was confusing
I admit I do like the movie, but only for it's amazing sound affects and graphics. The plot was confusing though and I got lost somewhere at the beginning, but besides that I will give it one thumb up.

All in all a well done film.
The only thing I deduct is that the main guy is just too week.
I do see why the writer did it but hes just too week.
